Every year, there are two major month-long writing events on the Web. The is National Novel Writing Month in November and Script Frenzy in April. I’ve never felt that a good first anything of a novel could be done in 30 days, at least the way I write, so I’ve kept my Novembers free for normal things, like Thanksgiving!
I do, however, take on Script Frenzy and produce a first draft of a screenplay in 30 days. 100 pages. Of course, the way scripts are formatted, it isn’t as many words as you think. Usually a 100 pages of screenplay is between 30,000 and 40,000 words. Closer to 30, in most cases.
This year, I’m taking another stab at a script I’ve played with on and off for the last five years. This is the year to produce a good first draft screenplay! It is time to take all I’ve learned about writing over the years, and all I’ve learned about movies over the last year, and apply them and make “Closing Time” a marketable script.
So, come Friday, I’ll be spending at least 3 hours a day chunking away at my keyboard in my quest to write the next Oscar, Golden Globe winning masterpiece.
